Mayenei Hayeshua is now working to open a new department of Eating Disorders
Anorexia is a life-threatening psychological eating disorder caused by a mix of psychological, social, biological and environmental factors. Although anorexia has the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses, it is estimated that only 10% of anorexics actually receive treatment.
Professor Rael Strous, Medical Director of Mayanei Hayeshua’s newly-opened Mental Health Building: “The ultra-orthodox community is not immune to anorexia, a highly destructive disorder that is so harmful to a person’s body and nefesh.”
Mayanei Hayeshua’s founder and president, Dr Moshe Rothschild: “The decision to create the new Department of Eating Disorders is a matter of Pikuach Nefesh. Unless we urgently provide treatment to anorexics and their families, more people are going to die. It is our sacred duty to tackle the scourge of anorexia that is afflicting our community.”
The treatment programme will include occupational, cooking, music, gardening, psycho-drama, and pet therapies; group excursions; illness self-management therapy; and self-awareness therapy. The Department of Eating Disorders will keep family members regularly informed and updated, and where appropriate, will involve the family in the treatment schedule. The department will maintain constant personal contact with patients and their families for long periods after discharge, and liaises closely with local social workers.
In the last week of November 2019, Professor Rael Strous, the South African-born medical director of Mayanei Hayeshua’s Mental Health Centre, and professor of psychiatry at Tel Aviv University’s Faculty of Medicine, was in London for a busy round of meetings and events organised by the British Friends of Mayanei Hayeshua.
